Open Source

With the increasing number of organizations using open source software, it is clear that price is not the only factor.

There are many advantages users are accruing from using these tools over the proprietary ones. Some of these benefits have proven more valuable than the low price of these open source software.

In this article, I am listing the reasons that make open source tools a viable alternative to proprietary tools.

Low Cost

Studies have shown that businesses that use open source tools collectively save about $60 billion annually.

This is true since the programs are developed to be accessible to the majority hence the low price compared to proprietary ones that may be unaffordable for small businesses and individuals. And since the open source tools are created to work with almost any machine, this allows you to continue using your old hardware without having to spend more money on upgrades to current ones as demanded by most proprietary software.

Reliability

These open source programs are very reliable since they are developed by highly skilled developers who are enthusiastic to produce the best.

These tools have the contributions of thousands of other developers, therefore, bringing so many fresh creative ideas into one single program. They perform so well, with little or no bugs since the numerous contributors ensure every aspect of the software is optimized and defects fixed.

Flexibility

Since you are not tied to any proprietary tool, there is no need to stick to any specific IT architecture that may frequently force you to upgrade your hardware or complementary software.

You have the freedom to mix your choice of software to make a system that works best for you without any restrictions. There are so many options to enhance your flexibility and also allows you to modify the software to your preference.

Security

Open source tools have superior security compared to the proprietary ones. Open source code is visible to the public making it easy to detect weakness and fix them with the help of so many developers. The obscure proprietary software doesn’t make it easy for developers to discover the weaknesses, therefore, fixing security issues may take time maybe after a breach.

The proprietary software companies have a limited number of developers looking for bugs in the software. However, open source codes have a worldwide community constantly looking for weaknesses and fixing them. It takes months for a vulnerable code to be fixed in the proprietary programs.

Support

Since open source software is in most cases free, the worldwide support of the vibrant community is freely available to all users.

There are online forums with well-documented guides, forges, forums, newsgroups, live support chat and wikis to help all users around the world freely. Business can get paid support for the extra assurance but still far below what proprietary programs cost.

Interoperability

These open source software adhere to open standards more than proprietary software this ensures more interoperability with other computers, businesses, and users. This clearly shows you should go for the open source tools.

Auditability

Open source software has an open code that can be audited for quality and security, unlike the closed source that has only the vendor’s assurance of its security and adherence to standards. This leaves you with only faith in their word but no ability to carry out your own audit. Open source codes are visible meaning one can see and confirm the lack of vulnerabilities.
